Children's Play, Learning and Development

This course is for students from Year 10 onwards. Children’s Play Learning and Development offers students a chance to investigate a variety of topics:

  • Unit 1: Patterns of child development. Students will study child growth for the ages 0-7 years, and holistic development, which includes physical, cognitive, communication and language, emotional and social development. This unit is a core unit and is externally assessed through a one hour exam out of 50 marks.
  • Unit 2: Promoting Children’s development through play. Students will study play as a route of children’s learning and look at the early years foundation stage. This is a core unit and will be internally assessed.
  • Unit 3: The principles of early years practice. Students will study inclusive practice and the effects of a non-inclusive practice on children. Students will understand the importance of empowering children and how early years settings promote this. This is a mandatory unit and will be internally assessed.

Career Opportunities

Completion of the Children’s, Play and Learning development course leads to careers in nurseries and schools working with young children. It supports progression to more specialised courses that can result in a career in Health and Social Care for example care homes, hospitals and psychology.
