Religious Education

At St. Peter’s C of E Academy, students are encouraged to actively participate in RE and to develop their understanding of the place of faith and belief in the 21st Century.

The aims for Religious Education are outlined below -

  • To provide all learners with a comprehensive understanding of Christianity, rooted in the person, work and teachings of Jesus Christ.
  • Provoke challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life, the self, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. R.E develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity, other principal religions, including Islam, Judaism and Sikhism and the traditions that examine these questions, fostering personal reflection and spiritual development.
  • Encourage students to explore their own beliefs in the light of what they learn, as they examine issues of religious belief and faith and how this impact on personal, institutional and social ethics; and to express their responses. This also builds resilience to anti-democratic or extremist narratives.
  • Enable students to build their own sense of identity and belonging which helps them flourish within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society
  • Teach students to develop respect for others, including people with different faiths and beliefs and helps to challenge prejudice and discrimination
  • Prompt students to consider their responsibilities to themselves and to others, and to explore how they might contribute to their communities and to wider society. Actively encourage empathy, generosity and compassion.
  • Develop a sense of awe, wonder and mystery, contributing to SMSC education.
  • Acquire a personal understanding of the importance of Religious Education in a Church academy such as St. Peter’s, and be encouraged to make a positive contribution to the Christian life of the academy.
  • Contribute to the development of and an interest in, the traditions and Christian character of our academy.
  • Develop, nurture and strengthen Christian attitudes to life, with particular reference to caring for and giving service to other people in the community.
  • Understand the nature and significance of religious experience in people’s lives and recognise some of the ways by which these various experiences have been interpreted and how they have been expressed through a variety of religious traditions.
  • Explore the relevance of the Bible & Christian tradition, not only for those people for whom the different books in the Bible were originally written and tradition formed, but also for people in the world of today, both Christian and non- Christian.
  • Explore the possible consequences of religious belief, experience and practice in the development of personal attitudes, and to develop their own spiritual and ethical code by which they live their daily lives.

Curriculum Content

Years Seven and Eight

At KS3, students have two lesson of Religious Education per week. They are internally assessed and examined.

As a Church academy, two thirds of our curriculum content focuses on the study, history and practice of Christianity and how Christian principles affect everyday life. We also explore a wide range of world religions including Islam, Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism.

Year Seven

  • Why is it important to celebrate? (Exploring world and religious festivals and how they add meaning to life.
  • Why do holy books and places of worship matter? (Exploring the meaning and significance of worship, belief and practice for a range of world religions, including Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism)

Year Eight

  • What happens when we die? (Exploring a range of views on the afterlife and the reasons for belief or non belief).
  • Why do covenants matter? (An examination of covenants between God and the people of Judaism and Christianity).

Years Nine, Ten and Eleven

Through Years Nine, Ten and Eleven, students have three lessons of Religious Studies per week. They are externally examined at the end of Year Eleven. We study Edexcel Religious Studies B (GCSE 9-1)

Students investigate eight units, examining a range of Christian and Muslim key beliefs, alongside religious perspectives on a range of issues affecting life on a familial, local, national and global level.
