Ash Wednesday - 6th March 2019

Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar. Traditionally Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer and takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday.

On Wednesday 6th March, St Peter’s CofE Academy held an Ash Wednesday Service led by Reverend Canon Andrew Wickens, Rector of Stoke Minster.

Many students from each year group including the Year 10 GCSE Music class participated in the service and everyone was provided with the opportunity if they so wished to experience ‘Ashing’.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the placing of ‘ashes’ on the foreheads of participants as a sign of getting in touch with your own mortality…. "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."] The ashes are usually prepared by burning palm crosses from previous year's Palm Sunday celebrations.
